I thought perhaps it had something to do with wireless standards, like FreeBSD is not the forum. We have tested cards using those chipsets and they work well. The 4 refers to the kernel interfaces section of the man page collection, in this case specifying a network driver.

Is that correct and what is the letter at the end? While one revision iwh a particular model may be compatible and work well, another card of the same model may be incompatible.

The iwa driver you found just might work, but be aware that getting it built isn’t trivial and will take some work. For more detailed information on cards supported, and the most up to date information, refer to the pfSense wiki.
